Friday 24th November 2017

In English, we have started a new text all about interviews. We are going to be interviewing Yar4 to find out what it is like to be a junior! We can’t wait but first we are going to learn all about an effective question, note taking and emotions.

In Maths, we have been super busy learning all about fractions of amounts. We used the cubes to help us understand sharing and how this can help us find 1/4 or 3/4. We then looked at the tricky method of grouping and used this to find fractions in groups.

In Science we have been developing our knowledge of materials by sorting them into groups. We looked at different items and thought about how they can change shape. We tested them to see if they would stretch, twist, bend or squash.

In History we ordered the life of Christopher Columbus. Next week we will be looking at why he was significant and what he discovered.

This term we will be making our own lunchbox. This week we looked at a variety of materials. We found that cling-film would be good for the outside as it is waterproof and flexible however we realised that cardboard would not make a good lunch box as it turns weak when water is added.

On Friday we were taught by Mia and Thomas who are in Y4. This was part of our Takeover Challenge Day. They were absolutely fantastic and worked so hard to make sure that all children understood. A MASSIVE well done to all of the children who taught classes today, we are all so proud of you.

Well done to Bethany who was our Learning Hero this week. She has been busy exercising her perseverance muscle in ALL areas and always displays beautiful manners.

Our Championship Point winners were Brody, Bethany, Chloe and Aaron.

Friday 17th November 2017

I would like to start by thanking all of those who came to Parents’ Evening this week. It was such a pleasure to share your child’s progress with you. The children in 2SS are dedicated to their learning and are all an absolute pleasure to teach.

In English, we have been busy learning about the Moon. We have learnt about the suffixes -er and -est and how we use these to compare. We then looked at noun phrases and extended noun phrases and how we can use these in an information text. On Friday, we used different sources to gather information. We used the internet, video, information sheets and books. On Monday, we will be putting these together to create our own fact file!

In Maths, we have been super busy learning all about fractions of amounts. We used the cubes to help us understand sharing and how this can help us find 1/2 or 1/3. We then looked at the tricky method of grouping, we are going to continue using this on Monday when we are going to be finding quarters of amounts.

In Science we have been developing our knowledge of materials by sorting them into groups. We looked at different items and thought about why they were made out of that material. We found that a towel is made out of fabric so that it can soak up water. We then explained that a window is made of glass so that we can see through it. Next week we will be trailing different materials to see which is the best boat for Christopher Columbus to travel in.

In Geography, we labelled the 5 oceans. We then put them in order of size. A well done to Jasmine who spotted that the challenge wanted them to start with the smallest.

This term we will be making our own lunchbox. This week we looked at a variety of different of lunchboxes to find what makes the best product. Next week we will be looking at different materials.

Well done to Brody who was our Learning Hero! He is an absolute pleasure to teach and displays such beautiful manners.

Our Championship Point winners were Olivia, Sophie, Jasmine, Lily and Edie.

Week 1 Autumn 2

In English, we started a new text all about the Moon! We have gathered lots of facts about this fascinating planet and discovered that the Moon makes tides in the Earth’s seas and reflects because of the light from the sun. Next week we will be developing our understanding of noun phrases and expanded noun phrases before moving onto using comparative adjectives -er and -est.

In Maths, we have been super busy learning all about fractions of shapes. We can find a half, quarter and a third of shapes even when they have been split into many more pieces. We are now beginning to count in halves and next week we will be moving onto counting in quarters.

In Science we have been developing our knowledge of materials by sorting them into groups. We then used adjectives to describe them and learnt that transparent meant see-through and that flexible means bendy. Next week we will be discussing why materials are made from certain objects.

In Geography, we labelled the 7 continents and discussed their sizes. We used this information to put them into order starting with the largest.

In History, we have started to learn all about Christopher Columbus. We used our inference and deduction skills to gather facts from a text. Next we will be using a timeline to order the key events in his life.

This term we will be making our own lunchbox. This week we looked a wicker basket and discussed why this would be an effective lunchbox and how it could be improved.

Well done to Aicha who was our Learning Hero. Well done for using great resilience when completing fractions this week!

Our Championship Point winners were Sophie, Jasmine, Brody and Christabel.

Our winning house was Honesty.

Happy half-term!

We have had our assessment week this week. The children have completed spelling, reading and maths assessments and the results of these will be shared with you after the holidays in the up-coming parents evening.

In English, we have been busy writing and improving our character description about the Pied Piper. The children have worked their socks of to produce a fabulous piece of writing. They were then challenged to write their own one about the King – this was an independent piece and the results blew me away. Well done Year 2 you have worked so hard.

Next term, we are going to be writing a fact file about the Moon and interviewing KS2 about what it is like to be a junior.

In Maths, we recapped over doubling and halving and also mastered Carrol Diagrams. Next term we will be discovering all about fractions. We are going to start by looking at fractions in shapes (1/3,1/4,2/4,3/4) before moving onto fractions of amounts)

In Science we used our knowledge of animal diets and created our own food plate for one. We wrote our own advert to advertise our fabulous meal and these were brilliant. I’d be sure to spend my own money on these meals.

Next term, we are going to be learning about materials.

In History, we finished our biography based on the life of Neil Armstrong. Next term we will be finding out about Christopher Columbus and why we remember him today.

In Art, we continued to practise our shading and tones. The results were fantastic and were a credit to the children’s perseverance. Next term we are going to be focusing on Design and Technology and looking at what makes an effective lunch box.

Well done to Christabel who was our Learning Hero of the week. She is always ready to learn and has a beaming smile permanently on her face cheering both Mrs Slater and I up.

Well done to Sophie who was our first Gold Card Champion.

Our Championship Point winner was Chloe.

Our winning house was Determination.

Friday 20th October 2017

I would like to start by updating you on our reading. Well done to all those children who have brought their book in at least once this week. We have seen an improvement on our 8 books that were changed before our competition was counted last week  and this week we won the reading trophy! WELL DONE!!!!

Sadly there are still some children who are not bringing their book in. If you have lost the book please let us know and we will provide you with a new one. It is vital that the children read at home as much as possible and we expect that the books will be changed at least once per week.

Kind Regards,

Miss Szoltysek

In English, we have been busy focusing on our new text – A Hole in the Hill. We are going to be writing a character description all about the Pied Piper. So far we have investigated a WAGOLL, used conjunctions in sentences and improved our vocabulary by using synonyms. Next week we will be planning our description before writing and editing it.

In Maths, we have been using the greater and less than sign to order different amounts. Mrs Taylor and Miss Leah both came to watch our lesson and were blown away by the children’s reasoning. Well done guys! We also looked at adding and subtracting 10 as well as finding 1 more and 1 less than an amount.

In Science we used our knowledge of animal diets and created our own food plate for one. Next week we will be writing our own advert to advertise our fabulous meal. Keep tuned for more!

In History, we wrote a draft for our biography all about Neil Armstrong. We are going to be making a few edits and then copying it up neatly before putting it into our project books.

Well done to Olivia who was our Learning Hero. Olivia shows such fantastic determination in all that she does and is willing to help her classmates to achieve their best. A well deserved hero! We are so proud.

13/10/17

What a busy week it has been!

I would like to start by asking that children bring their reading books in at least once a week. Sadly this has not been happening and we are falling behind in our reading championship. A mere 8 books were brought in before the totals were added up last week. It is vital that the children read at home as much as possible.

In English, we wrote our non-chronological reports up into their own booklet and added images and captions. We then thought about how we could review our texts. Our new story is called The Hole in the Hill and is based on the Pied Piper. The children are thoroughly enjoying this text and cannot wait to write their character description.

In Maths, we have been focusing on shape and symmetry. We started off by finding lines of symmetry before moving onto right angles. This is an area the children found tricky and so we will be continuing to review this throughout the rest of the term. We also looked at tessellation and which shapes can do this.

In Science we researched our key vocabulary – carnivore, herbivore and omnivore. We then used the IPADs to research where different animals fell and put them into a Venn diagram.

In History, we have started to look at the features of a biography. In pairs, we researched the meaning of technical vocabulary – orbit, spacecraft, NASA and astronaut.

Well done to Jamie who was our Learning Hero for this week. Jamie shows fantastic resilience and perseverance in every task he does, he never fails to make me smile. Well done!

Edie was our Handwriting Hero. She has made an amazing improvement in her letter formation already! Well done!

Our Championship Point winners was Hollie.

Our winning house was Passion.

Friday 6th October 2017

I would like to start by thanking all of those who came to watch our class assembly today. The children have worked so hard and we hope you enjoyed hearing about what we have been learning.

In English, we have been very busy writing our non-chronological report on Hummingbirds. We used the IPADs to help us gather our information and used our knowledge of headings and sub-headings to separate our information. We can’t wait to write them up into our own little fact files! We hope you are excited to read them too!

In Maths, we have been focusing on addition and subtraction and how our number bonds can help us to solve these. We have seen some fabulous resilience and great examples of the children challenging themselves. Next week we will be moving onto shape and lines of symmetry.

In R.E we have delved deeper into our focus religion – Judaism. We delved deeper into the story of David and Goliath and created a story board to help explain what happened.

In History, we interviewed our talk partner who took on the role of Neil Armstrong. We thought about what questions we would ask if he was still alive now. Next up…we will be starting to write a biography all about Neil Armstrong.

Well done to Sophie who was our Learning Hero for this week. Sophie is a fantastic role model and is always being positive about her learning.

Dara made it onto the Extraordinary Zone for fantastic reasoning.

Our Championship Point winners were Chloe and Olivia.

Our winning house was Self-Belief.

What a busy week we’ve had!

We have been practising for our Class Assembly on Friday 6th October. We hope you can make it at 9o’clock in the Junior hall.

In English, we have started a new text – The King of the Birds. We are enjoying the story so far and have looked at present tense and adverbs and verbs. The children have shown a fantastic understanding by answering a range of comprehension questions. They blew me away with their answers. Next week we will be beginning to gather information for our non-chronological report on Hummingbirds.

In Maths, we have been focusing on doubling. The children found this tricky at first but have shown great resilience as we have tried to become quicker at recalling them. Next week we will move onto halving and how our doubles can help us to understand these.

In Science, we have started to make our own information book that describes the food sources of different animals. We are looking forward to completing them on Monday before moving onto grouping animals using the terms – carnivores, herbivores and omnivores.

In R.E we have begun to focus on our religion for this half term – Judaism. We created our own Star of David and wrote about its meaning.

In Art, we created our own space images in the style of Peter Thorpe. We will be showing these off in our Assembly.

Well done to Felicity who was our Learning Hero for this week. She is always displaying the BLP Learning Powers and has shown great perseverance when doubling 2 and 3 digit numbers.

Hollie and Daniel made it onto the Extraordinary Zone for great collaboration and reasoning during Maths.

Friday 22nd September 2017

I would like to start by thanking the parent helpers who joined us on our trip to Jodrell Bank. Without your help we wouldn’t be able to visit such exciting places.

We had a wonderful time there and enjoyed many different activities. We learnt more about Neil Armstrong’s mission to the moon in the Saturn V rocket. We made our own rockets and then used our senses to describe the moon. The children behaved brilliantly and are a credit to MRPA.

In English, we have been busy reading our Read Write Inc text – A Jar of Oil. We wrote our letters and then up-levelled them using peer, self and teacher assessment. I have been very impressed by the writing produced so far and the children are really working hard to make improvements. We have been focusing on letter formation and including capital letters and full stops.

In Maths, we have been focusing on our number bond to 10, 20 and 100. We have used our knowledge to solve both addition and subtraction number sentences. Many of the children have been challenging themselves with the Power Ups. Next week we will be moving onto doubling and halving as well as using our number bond knowledge to solve further additions.

In Science, we looked at how a food chain works and discussed vocabulary – producer, consumer, predator and prey.

In P.E, we practised balancing in different ways.

Well done to Theo who was our Learning Hero for this week. He worked his resourceful muscle very hard during our trip to Jodrell Bank, asking lots of questions and wanting to find out more.

Daniel was our first Handwriting Hero of the year. Well done on great letter formation!

Our Championship Point winner this week was Riley.

Our winning house was Respect.

What a busy week we have had in Year 2.

In English, we have been busy reading our Read Write Inc text – A Jar of Oil. We have been focusing on spelling and sentence structure. We also extended our knowledge of past tense verbs, using these in sentences about our story. Next week we will be planning our letter and then completing our first piece of independent writing. I can’t wait to see what great authors I have.

In Maths, we have recapped over our number bonds to 5,6,7,8,9 and 10. Next week we will be moving onto our numbers bonds to 20 and 100 whilst also extending our knowledge of the related subtraction facts.

In P.H.S.E we discussed the importance of expressing and explaining reasons for our opinions. We used our class bears Barry and Bill to find out how other people can feel when we don’t share or think about others feelings.

In Topic, in pairs we researched Neil Armstrong and completed a comprehension about him. We learnt lots of interesting facts.

In P.E, we learnt how to travel in different ways and also how to build our core strength.

Well done to Dara who was our first Learning Hero of the year. This was awarded for great resourcefulness when recalling information from our focus text.

We had 2 of our class members reach the Extraordinary Zone. Well done to Edie and Riley for great reasoning in our Maths lessons this week.
